Clinton has signed for the Pro Conti Champion Systems cycle team. This will see him back in Belgium again but doing pro races and some Asian tour races. Just waiting to get the team plan for Clinton and we will put his training year together.

Olly is about to race his key event at XTERRA in Maui, hoping he calls me tomorrow to tell me he is the third world champ I have coached.

The MTB riders are now hitting it in training to be ready for the national series in starting in January.

A new bike has arrived through Logan and his San Jose Hotels team, loving it.

John Lee BSocSc. Well the year start well with Clinton having a stagier with Radio shack and signing a contract with Pegasus. Unfortunately that turned to be a vapour team. So back to the amateurs for another Belgium season. He has had a couple of good wins in some big races, in between having appendix out and rebuilding again.
Wade has been progressing well with his team and has had a couple of very good races and podiums. Logan has been ripping up Texas, winning most of the races he is entering.
Olly is building up his Xterra Training and should be a good bet for a world Title come October in Maui. Scott and Monique are battling crazy problems but hopefully getting through that. Ash and Raewyn have been racing well through the winter and picked up a couple of wins on the MTB.
Almost for got the biggest start to the year was backing up with a tour win at the NZ Tour of Wellington. Was a great pleasure to put together a team that supported George Bennett to his big win.

John Lee BSocSc. These large multi sport events are something else. 30million spent on the opening ceremony alone!!!
results were what we expected with our team, with the highlight being Kates 4th in the Time trial. My hope is that this inspires these athletes to work even harder and make a real go at being excellent in this sport. I hope that they have learned a little about professionalism and what it takes to succeed.

While this was going Clinton was racing Stagier with Radio Shack at the Tour of Denmark, he pulled out a 5th on the last road stage!! He has a few more races coming up including Paris Brussels, then on to Commonwealth Games in India. They say winners are grinners and we sure are smiling.

I always wanted to build a team of elite level riders and take them to this tour. I hadnt been back since Bryce Shapley got 2nd in 2000. So it was time. I build the team with Wade and Clinton as my first choice riders and though them developed a team that would back each other and pass on any personal ambition if needed. We added George Bennett who was racing with Wade all year in France and is a beautiful climber with many wins in France already for some one so young. Clinton suggested that Mike Torckler would be good to have also. I didnt know Mike but knew he has been U23 TT champ and can climb like the wind. That left one more spot and I suggested Aaron Strong as another climber and some one with a great deal of knowledge and has raced in teams with both Clinton and Wade at the Tour of Southland. So the team was set and I approached Jorge Sandoval about being in one of his Sponsored teams. He agreed and we started as the Cardno team.

From the start the guys from Cardno were in touch offering a team car and setting up anything we needed at the stage finish. These guys become part of our team and we were proud to be part of team Cardno. It was great to have the corporate managers in the car and teach them about the dynamics of racing when they could see it evolve, its just not a ride from one place to another. The level of commitment that the team put out on the road has made a great impression on the Sponsors and they are keen to do it bigger and better next year. I sense a partnership developing here.

Race tactics for us was simple. Loss no time on the first day and save everything for Admirals hill. We had a plan that Michael would attack on the second to last climb and use this to go for stage victory. The back up was George to hit it on Admirals. And with Aaron also we knew we had a great chance to surprise some people in this tour. The race went just to plan, Mike closed a gap on the climb and then attacked to take a 5 second lead of the Drapac rider. This stage also saw team Cardno with 3 riders in top 10 and this set up our victory in the teams classification.

From this point George had to put aside dreams of the U23 comp as he had to be Mikes right hand man. Clinton, Aaron and Wade then proceeded to kill themselves over the next 2 stages to ensure that Mike stayed Yellow and as long as we had three finish in or close to the main peloton we would have Teams sorted also.

Great results,
Michael Torckler 1st Overall and 3rd KOM
George Bennett 2nd U23 and 9th overall
I dont even know where Wade and Clinton finished as its not important, they did a huge job.
Aaron was a DNF but not before he gave the team everything he had.

And me Now a UCI 2.2 tour winning DS

John Lee BSocSc. Roadies -Wade has been racing well in France and has made an impact on his team, as we new he would. Ryan has stated to come on with a real concentrated effort in training and is ready to go to the next level. Andrew Ward has been making steady progress but has been really unlucky racing in Aus, but it will click soon. Tom David is still finding his feet at the U23 level, just as Ryan, Logan and Clinton did in their first years. Logan has been up and down with training and racing but looking to have a strong 2nd half. Clinton has been in great form and has been winning races, and another top 10 finish in Paris Roubaix. The plan now is to win as much as possible to make a CV that turns heads.

The MTB riders have been making good results as usual. Ash the U23 National Champ, Monique the North island series winner. Patrick Avery, Scott Green and Nigle McDowell also great national series and championships. The Worlds team has been anounced and in the first round of selections Ash, Monique and Patrick have been selected and we hope that Scott will be added to the list after this weekends racing. Thomas Lindrup has had a few problems but now has that sorted and is training well for defence of his World 24hr Title.

My coaching has been going well with, I was invited to be guest speaker at a Sport BOP coaches breakfast and just recently was the Bike presenter at a training camp for Tri athletes going to the age group world championships. The Waiariki Bike Squad (now including road and track riders) has been going great and with Katie and Carl also making the worlds team, the squad will have great representaion at the worlds which is a fantastic achievement for the team.

John Lee BSocSc. Pleasing to finish this grad diploma with an average of "Pass with Distinction" including one course, training elite athletes with "High Distinction", the highest grade awarded. I also had a nomination for Bay of Plenty Coach of the Year, but was beating out by the NZ sevens Rugby coach.....next year!!! But Monique won the Junior Sports Women award, wicked

I have also been approached by one of the most promising Juniors (now U23) and are happy to be guiding the training of Tom David who will be riding for the Davo-lotto continental team in Belgium next year. Other great news is the progress of Wade Mangham, who was looking to have a domestic season next year when out of the blue a club in France has invited him to their team next year. There approach was based initialy on Wades worlds results and when they looked deeper they like the results that he had gained here in NZ. He even gets to take a mate over with him to make the NZ-France transition a litle easier.

Clinton is joining a new Amateur team in Belgium "PWS" and will be on a cervelo next year. This should be a good move for Clinton as he will be having another go at winning Paris Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, if they come off He will have the Pro tour knocking on his door for sure.

Logan is in the process of signing with a pro squad in belgium that features an absolute legend in Belgie cycling. More news when its official. Ryan Wills is heading back to Bodysol - Euro Millions Pôle Continental Wallon.

So with 5 riders racing in Europe this year I might just have to take a holiday and go and see them all racing.

Back home the Waiariki squad is getting all the pre build up stuff out of the way with muscle screans, testing etc. soon to be into the National cup races......

so more to come

John Lee BSocSc. And another World Champion with Thomas winning the U25 24hour MTB title in canada.

I have just returned from South Africa where I had the role of National Junior Road Coach. The highlight of that trip was the good results of Tom David who backed up last years results with another top 10 in TT and a strong showing in the road race. The other riders raced strongly and only faded late in the race. For all of them it was the biggest race that they have done.

Thats about it really, just getting back into preparing the Waiariki MTB squad and helping the roadies gain those big results that make people turn heads.

John Lee BSocSc. Clinton has been playing in Italy at the tour delle regioni. But due to a bit of time lost and the really bad weather conditions he pull out of the race, there are more important and better suited races just round the corner in belguim. Ryan has finally started a race and finished 12th and more important has his SRM working. And Josh Brown has also joined the coaching team and I will be helping him make some results on the roads of belgium. I really need to win lotto and move over there and run a team of Kiwis.

we also just had the Tineli junior tour in rotorua and the TA selection tour in Te Awamutu
This was an goal event of Wades and he road strong races with a stage win in TA.

Now I have my selector hat on with the other two CNZ selectors to get teams for the worlds, Canada and Australia.

and the Prime Ministers Scholarship continues to take a big hunk of my time. This weekend we hope she adds the NZ title to the list.
She really is changing as an athlete quickly and there is a whole lot more to come.
Nina Pederson is also lining up in the pro event and hoping to head to the podium in a very competitive field. (Just quietly my pick will be Sonia Foote and Gen Mathews to fight it out)
Clinton is heading into one of the major goals of the season this weekend, the U23 Tour of Flanders. It was a happy home. The road races didnt go as well but were solid in the hot conditions, Clinton will never wonder what if? in a road race, I wish he would some times but he is learning to be patient as the races get longer and faster. I have attached my training sheet showing in colour what I did and what I didn’t do and first glance for me is there is heaps room for improvement as I missed a lot and the car crash didn’t help too but please look and see what you think and again a big big thanks for the program and helping me get back to some sort or fitness and really can only go up from here. Thanks so much and ill talk to you soon cheers again for the program and I look forward to your response

Thanks so much again for taking time out to do this program for me and getting off my ass to get to this point

Cheers shaun.s

John Lee BSocSc. We have real talent in our cyclists and this trip did nothing but confirm it for me.

The plan was to get in some hard fast racing, followed by a bit of recovery and adjustment to altitude and then the Worlds competition itself.

Stage 1 was the tour or Abitibi in Quebec Canada. This is the only UCI junior race in Canada and had riders from nine countries on the start list. This invitation gave us a chance to take the riders selected for the worlds and give a chance to those likely to be there next year a bit of competition at a very high level. So joining Tom David, James Williamson, and James Dobson, were Wade Mangham, Josh Brown and Simon “horsey” Honor.

We really had no idea how this would pan out but what a fantastic race it turned into. It started with a 400m dual sprint as the prologue, won by the later to be world TT champ, Taylor Phinny, yes that Phinny son of Tour de France stage winner Davis, and 4 x world pursuit champ Connie. We had Ok finishes, but nothing to say we were about to light up the race…..

Next was the Team Time trial, we didn’t have specific TT rigs for every one, so the result was as we expected, close but not quite there. Come the next day and Tom David was on fire, jumping away on the last lap of the finish circuit to win the stage and take the leaders jersey, the best young rider, the Sprint and the KOM. He flowed this up the next day with a win in the TT. I have never seen a TT like it, it started under ground in a Gold mine, in the dark!!! and with a 17% climb to get out!!.

At this stage we also manage to pick up the teams classification also, so we had everything.

The nature of the race was that it was going to go down to sprint time bonuses to win, and we just didn’t have the speed of Phinny, so he just slowly took seconds off till he eventually got the lead back on the second to last day. So we ended having achieved the goal of a hard workout for the worlds guys and gave the others some experience in the biggest race of their lives so far, a 9 stage tour. This was an absolute bonus that we really were a factor in the race and the guys were just glowing with confidence when ever we hot the start line. It’s a nice feeling seeing that in a bunch of kiwi guys, and they were also extremely supportive of each other and a real team was developing over the week.

So we finished the tour with Tom in second, the team in second and a bunch of cash to split between the riders.

So from here it was down to Colorado Springs Olympic Training Centre, we would spend a week here just recovering and starting a build up of volume and intensity as the guys adjusted to the altitude. This is an amazing facility, with everything laid on. It is set up completely devoid of government funding, but funded though commercial sponsorship.

So Mexcio was the next stop, training done, it was race time. First up was the TT with James Williamson and Tom David. Poor James had the honour of leading the field away, not easy with no targets to follow, but he gave us good split times to gauge Tom off. Tom on the other had was 4th from last away so we knew what it would take to get a good time. And Tom gave us one, finishing in 5th place on a “flat” yeah right TT course. This was our best ever TT finish in the mens race from memory so we were very happy with this. Both riders were smashed at the end, just what a coach likes to see, an honest effort.

So the road race, 115 starter, on a hilly hot course. We were told it would be a bunch finish but on seeing it we could see the field would be blown all over it. And that’s how it turned out. The main bunch just got smaller and smaller until the last 2 laps of 8 when the Italian, attack and the bunch exploded. We still had Tom and James Williamson in the chase group but that was about to explode also. So the Italians rode on to a 1,2,3 finish…..Impressive to say the least. Tom finished in the next bunch in 21st place, James was in the next bunch and by then it was just ones and twos surviving the course. Did I say it was Hot!!

So from a coaching point of view, what had we achieved, we had a team of extremely confident riders start the world champs. We had three riders leave Canada knowing that they could have been competitive if they were in world’s team and hungry for next year. We have qualified a full team for next year in South Africa and Tom the “Gentle Giant” has turned some heads.

Just have to thank the assistance of Mike Leach, our Kiwi mechanic in Canada and Jason Rico and Cassandra Carry for the assistance in Mexico.

John Lee

<st1:street><st1:address>Junior Road</st1:address></st1:Street> Coach

John Lee BSocSc. He will be very good next year as a 2nd year U19. At the XTERRA Eloise and Nina in the pro fields got 4th and 5th but Monique dominated the 18-24 age group with a great win and by a huge margin. At the Secondary Schools MTB championships Ash won the XC the hill climb and the overall to be NZ Secondary School Champion. Of course I said yes right away as this is the direction i want to take my professional development over the next few year. I have also started back at University again doing a Post Grad Dip in Sports Coaching, 2 weeks in now and doing a lot of reading, first assignments due soon. It was fantastic to see Sonia back on the mountain bike, I think her first MTB race since the commonwealth games!!!!

What impressed me was the ease of Clintons win, the others were smashed after and Clinton was fresh as, and he won by 7 minutes.
